Look up on a clear night this Monday and you will see the Moon wearing roughly half her face in light, the right side bright and the left still folded into shadow. This is the First Quarter — sometimes called the half Moon, though astrologers know it as a crossroads moment rather than a midpoint.
Look up tonight and you will find almost nothing to see. The Moon, sitting at just one percent illuminated, has drawn itself so close to the Sun that it vanishes from our sky entirely — a brief, deliberate disappearance.
Look up tonight and you will find the Moon wearing just under half her light — a clean, vertical slice of silver hanging in the sky, the left side bright and the right side dark. This is the Last Quarter Moon, sometimes called the Third Quarter, and it arrives roughly three weeks into the lunar…
Tonight the Moon hangs opposite the Sun, as full and bright as it gets — 99% illuminated, which is to say: as close to a perfect full moon as the calendar allows. If you step outside after dark, you will likely feel it before you consciously register it. A sharpness in the air.

Tonight the Moon is completely full, swollen to its brightest and most visible point in the sky. If you step outside after dark, you will see it hanging there — a perfect, unblinking circle of reflected light.
Tonight, if you step outside and look up, you will find the Moon at roughly half-lit — a clean, bright crescent growing toward full on its right side, hovering somewhere between a sliver and a lantern.
Tonight, if you stepped outside and looked up, you would find almost nothing to see. The moon has slipped away entirely — just one thin percent of its face lit, the rest swallowed by shadow. This is the New Moon, the moment when the lunar cycle folds back on itself and begins again.
